THE USE OF ROWE CELL TEST RESULTS IN PREDICTING COLLAPSE SETTLEMENT OF SOILS
Rowe cell apparatus was used to determine the collapse potential for a laboratory unsaturated soil sample prepared by mixing well graded sand with 20%, by weight, kaolinite clay. Collapse potential was determined at soaking pressures of 50, 100, 200 and 400 kN/m2. Standard oedometer cell, 75 mm in diameter, was also used to determine the collapse potential for the same soil at the same soaking pressures.Comparison of the results showed that the values of the collapse potential determined from Rowe cell tests was smaller than that determined using the standard oedometer cell. Both results were then used to predict the collapse settlement of a small-scale laboratory model of a strip footing resting on the same type of soil. The predicted collapse settlement using the Rowe cell test results were in better agreement with the settlement observed in the footing model.
