POISSONS RATIO OF COMPACTED RESIDUAL SOILS

Poissons ratio expresses the change in radial strain with respect to vertical strain. As an unsaturated soil element is loaded, it deforms and its Poissons ratio increases. Such a characteristic has an important implication on the settlement behaviour of unsaturated soils under a structure where settlement is essentially one-dimensional behaviour at the beginning and gradually progresses towards a three-dimensional behaviour. This paper investigates the change in Poissons ratio of a soil specimen in a triaxial apparatus with the aid of local displacement transducers and proximity transducers. Compacted soil specimens at different degrees of saturation were prepared and tested in the triaxial apparatus under constant water content condition. The variation of Poissons ratio as the soil specimens are loaded is presented and the implication of such changes to the settlement characteristic of compacted residual soils is discussed.
