A STUDY ON YIELD STRESS IN UNSATURATED CLAY
This paper studies the yield stress of unsaturated soils and an estimation method for it. When predicting the mechanical behaviour of soil materials, it is important to estimate the yield stress which distinguishes the elastic state from the elasto-plastic state. Although the stress history that the specimens have experienced affects the yield stress of soils, suction also affects the yield stress in the unsaturated state. Thus, it is more difficult to estimate the yield stress of unsaturated soils than saturated soils. This paper studies the yield stress and subsequent compression curves through an investigation of a constitutive model that was previously introduced by the authors of the present paper. The constitutive model is based on the superloading surface concept proposed by Asaoka et al. (2000). It is confirmed that the constitutive model is able to describe the dependence of the suction on the yield stress by paying close attention to the dependence of the evolution law of the superloading surface on the degree of saturation.
