A STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AIR PERMEABILITY COEFFICIENT AND DEGREE OF WATER SATURATION OF UNSATURATED SOILS

It is important to study the air permeability for evaluating the influence of the behavior of poreair on the.water seepage of rainfall into the unsaturated soil. In this paper, the characteristics of the experimental relationships between the air permeability coefficient and the degree of water saturation of unsaturated sandy and silty soils were described. The applicability of the air permeability coefficient models for expressing this relationship was examined. As a result, the relationships between the air permeability coefficient and the degree of water saturation showed hysteresis in drying and wetting processes when the uniformity coefficient of grain size distribution was close to one. It was considered that this hysteresis was caused by the difference in the tortuosity of air flow channel in both processes. The model based on the Burdine theory seemed to be adequately applicable for estimating the air permeability coefficient during the drying process.
