ONE-DIMENSIONAL COMPRESSIBILITY OF UNSATURATED SOILS
In the tropics, near surface soils, especially residual soils are in an unsaturated state. The compressibility behaviour of such soils is seldom determined in the normal course of site investigation. However, developments in such soils may show problems after construction. This paper investigates the effect of degree of saturation on one-dimensional compressibility of compacted residual soils. The variations of compressibility parameters with respect to initial water content, initial void ratio and initial degree of saturation are presented. The results indicate that there is a critical degree of saturation, beyond which there is a greater increase in compressibility.
