EQUIVALENT MATRIC SUCTION AND GENERALIZED SOIL-WATER CHARACTERISTIC CURVE FOR UNSATURATED SOILS
The relationship between matric suction and capillary is examined on the basis of their definition and the distribution of capillary with depth in the ground is qualitatively analyzed. Then theoretical matric suction is obtained by solving numerically the nonlinear formula for meniscus between two mono-sized spheres derived from the principles of thermodynamics. Based on the concept of equivalent matric suction, a generalized soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) is defined which considers the effective area of meniscus on the particle surface. It has been shown that equivalent matric suction increases with degree of saturation up to its peak. A numerical analysis indicates that the increment in equivalent matric suction with respect to degree of saturation is smaller than that of matric suction. Both suction and equivalent suction decrease noticeably as the gap between the two mono-sized spheres increases while the contact angle has different effects on the two kinds of SWCCs.
