DIRECT SHEAR STRENGTH OF AN UNSATURATED SILTY SOIL UNDER LOW VERTICAL STRESS

The unsaturated soils have various soil suctions, namely, rain fall events, climate condition or evaporation environment. The soil suctions play large role to shear resistance of unsaturated soils. This paper mainly presents failure shear strength of an unsaturated silty soil with various suction ranges. Direct shear tests were conducted under constant vertical stress of 3.5 kPa. The pressure plate technique and the vapour pressure technique were used to be application of various suctions to soil specimens. The failure envelope of unsaturated soil was similar to saturated failure envelope when void structure was around saturation. According to increasing of matric suction, increment of shear strength to matric suction changed, namely, linear portion, non-linear portion and reduction portion. Finally, this study obtained carefully variation of shear strength in high soil suction ranges. It is be emphasized that desiccated soil essentially evidences horizontal failure envelope.
