SHEAR STRENGTH CHARACTERIZATION BASED ON INTER-PARTICLE STRESSES FOR UNSATURATED SOIL
Two kinds of inter-particle forces are incorporated for characterizing the shear strength for unsaturated soils: one is those in equilibrium with external forces and the other is those to be caused by the suction. A conceptual consideration was developed and the idea was checked with the results from triaxial tests on unsaturated specimens of two kinds of silt samples. Conclusions show that the expression in terms of the inter-particle stresses can explain the non-linearity of the shear strength-suction relationship.
