STUDY OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION AND SIMPLIFIED CALCULATION OF UNSATURATED SOIL

The consolidation of unsaturated soil is simplified into two stages in the study. In the first stage, the water and air in the pores cannot be drained immediately, which can support the loads together with the soil skeleton. The soil compresses immediately because of the compression of the pore-air. In the second stage, excess pore-pressure produced in the first stage is dissipated under the constant load. Water and air in the pores can be regarded as a mixed fluid with high degree of saturation. Balanced differential equations and pore fluid continuous equations are established regarding the compressibility of the mixed fluid in the pores. Then the effective stress and mixed fluid pressure can be computed. If the suction and pore-air pressure are required, the water continuous equation should be established first to compute the porewater pressure. A numerical example shows that the majority of deformation occurs immediately after loading, and the consolidation deformation is small. The process of deformation is similar to that of highway embankment. Therefore, the proposed simplification is reasonable and very useful for estimating the consolidation deformation of unsaturated soils in the engineering practice.
