A MICROSCOPIC STUDY OF RAINFALL-INDUCED GRANULAR SLOPE FAILURE
In unsaturated or so-called partially saturated soil, capillary menisci build up between soil particles and thereby an adhesive force that acts perpendicular to the tangential plane at the contact point is produced. In this paper, rainfall-induced slope failure is microscopically interpreted as the decrease of the adhesive force between particles after the infiltration of rain water. This is illustrated through the numerical simulation of a model tilting experiment on an assembly of aluminium rods. For the numerical simulation an extended DEM model is used where the adhesive force between particles is incorporated.
