KITAMURA MODEL FOR SEEPAGE BEHAVIOR OF UNSATURATED SOIL
It is important to estimate the seepage properties of soils when performing an unsaturated-saturated seepage analysis which is used to understand the slope failure mechanism and predict the time of slope failure occurrence due to rainfall. In this paper a practical numerical model for seepage behavior of unsaturated soil is proposed to improve the previous model (Kitamura et al. (1998)). In this paper,a new parameter, which can be obtained from the grain size distribution curve, is proposed. And, it is shown that the relation between the new parameter and the uniformity coefficient is linear. As a result, the void ratio, volumetric water content, suction and unsaturated-saturated permeability coefficient can be calculated using the practical numerical model. The soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) and the relationship between unsaturated-saturated permeability coefficient and degree of saturation can be derived. The numerical results are compared with those obtained from the laboratory soil tests.
