UNIFIED MODEL FOR SWELL AND COMPRESSION OF UNSATURATED CLAY
The engineering characteristics of clay are dominated in large part by the physico-chemical interactions presented in the clay-electrolyte system and the surface phenomena. The water volume absorbed by clay particles is related to the surface characteristics and matric suction using fractal theory. The water content is also related to matric suction of unsaturated soils. The swelling and compression deformation of unsaturated clays can be determined from the water volume, and the unified model (logv-logψ) for swelling and compression deformation can be derived from the fractal model for unsaturated clay.
