DEVELOPMENT OF A LOW-COST MINIATURE TENSIOMETER AND ITS APPLICATIONS
The paper presents a development of the new miniature tensiometers. Two types of tensiometers are being developed, one of which is designed to measure matrix suction upto 80 kPa, another for suctions in excess of 100 kPa. The device makes use of miniature commercial piezoresistive pressure sensor which is available at relatively low cost. Examples of applications of these devices are given for in-sim suction measurement, and soil-water retention curves determination. A particular attention is drawn to the determination of the effective strength parameter of soft Bangkok clay using the suction-monitored unconfined compression test.
