OSMOTIC SYSTEM IN LONG TERM TESTING OF UNSATURATED SOILS
The testing of samples in the laboratory represents one of the fundamental aspects of research in unsaturated soil behaviour. This paper presents results from a study that investigated the volumetric behaviour of a compacted natural clay under Ko conditions using a novel osmotic oedometer. The equipment was fitted with a synthetic semi-permeable membrane, and a suitable solution was employed to control the soil suction under atmospheric conditions. With the help of this set-up, it was possible to test samples along complex stress paths, involving a combination of loading-unloading cycles at constant suction, wetting-drying cycles under constant vertical stress, and monotonic wetting at constant volume. The results showed that with the correct selection of semi-permeable membrane and solution it was possible to conduct tests on unsaturated samples which could extend for long periods of time, in the order of months.
