DEFORMATION MEASUREMENT OF UNSATURATED SOIL SPECIMEN IN SUCTION-CONTROLLED TRIAXIAL TEST BASED ON DIGITAL IMAGE MEASUREMENT METHOD
A new technique of deformation measurement based on digital image measurement method is introduced for unsaturated soil specimen in suction-controlled triaxial tests. The digital image measurement method can measure the deformation of global and local specimen non-contactually and selectively and overcomes the shortcomings of using conventional strain measurement method for unsaturated soil specimen in suction-controlled triaxial tests. Meanwhile, the deformation process of the unsaturated soil specimen can also be recorded and analyzed when tests finished. The middle section of unsaturated soil specimen that is influenced relatively little by the end restraint, whose deformation can be measured handily and accurately adopting the method. The deformation measurements of unsaturated compacted soil specimens illustrate that the end restraint has significant influence on the specimen deformation. The deformation characteristics of middle section are obviously different from the global specimen that is affected by the end restraint in constant-suction isotropic compression and conventional triaxial compression tests. So the results of deformation measurement of middle section can veritably reflect correspondingly basic deformation characteristics of unsaturated soil and describe constitutive model suitably.
