SWELL KINETICS OF A SOIL AS A FUNCTION OF THE AVAILABILITY OF HYDRATION WATER
There exists an experimental evidence which indicates that swell behaviour of soils is strongly stress path dependent. In this study we try to demonstrate that this stress path dependency concerns as well the way water is added to the soil which swells. We show that an expansive soil exhibits different swelling behaviours whether it is saturated in one go or progressively hydrated when it is tested in a conventional oedometer. The results obtained are analyzed in the light of the double porosity model of soils first introduced by Alonso.
