LABORATORY STUDY OF DYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF UNSATURATED LOESS
As unsaturated loess is very sensitive to deformation, precise and consistent dynamic test data are difficult to obtain from conventional dynamic triaxial tests. It is proposed in this study to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of unsaturated loess by performing dynamic torsional shear tests to avoid the inherent limitations of conventional dynamic triaxial tests. The dynamic torsional triaxial apparatus was modified in order to measure the pore-water and pore-air pressures during dynamic loading. The dynamic strength, dynamic shear modulus and damping ratio of Yangling unsaturated intact loess were measured by testing specimens with different initial water contents.
