A CLIMATE PROTECTION STRATEGY FOR GERMANY: 40% REDUCTION OF CO2 EMISSIONS BY 2020 COMPARED TO 1990

In order to limit climate change to a temperature rise of 2℃, developed countries must reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020 compared to 1990. Germany can support a 30% reduction in the EU with its own commitment of 40% by 2020. With the measures presented in this paper, Germany can reduce 224 Million tonnes (Mt) of energy related CO2 emissions. The largest CO2 reductions are possible in electricity generation with savings of 40 Mt, by switching fuel and increased energy conversion efficiency (30 Mt) and an augmented 26% share of renewable energies (44 Mt). An increase in renewable energy from 70 to 140 TWh/year can be borne primarily by Multi-Mega-Watt wind turbines, both onshore and offshore, and electricity generation from biomass. Further reductions are possible by increased energy efficiency of buildings, expansion of combined heat and power production and reductions in transport and heat supply.
