A PATH TO QUALITY ASSURANCE OF SOLAR THERMAL PRODUCTS IN NEPAL
The Renewable Energy Project (REP) is a joint effort of the European Union and the Government of Nepal. Main objectives of the project are to create renewable energy infrastructure and services for the benefit of rural people in remote districts of Nepal. REP is also contributing to the development of quality assurance schemes for solar energy products and services. This is mainly achieved through support to the development of solar thermal testing capacity and upgrading of an existing PV test facility. The support consists of the design of a solar thermal test laboratory. It will be equipped and its staff will be trained for performance and quality testing of solar water heaters, solar thermal collectors, dryers and cookers. REP faces two major challenges implementing this task: To successfully set-up the laboratory and to increase the market demand for quality products and thus the industry engagement in quality issues. This paper explains how REP is addressing both issues in a diversified way. REP is co-funded by the European Union and the Government of Nepal.
