LOOKING IN THE MIRROR: CAN WE CHANGE THE REFLECTION OF OUR RESIDENTIAL HOUSING?
This paper reports the results of a set of serial interviews with home owners in New Zealand. Its aim was to examine how people currently make choices towards sustainable design measures so that we may better understand and market to the social factors influencing sustainable design and building within our cultures. Our houses are a reflection of our society. They reflect our past, climate, culture and our lifestyles. The current New Zealand building stock reflects the lack of sustainable building practice in New Zealand. The majority of New Zealand residents apparently say that they are pro-environment1 but their actions do not match these attitudes. This apparent cultural gap in our current living behaviours is creating an unsustainable built environment.
