DEVELOPMENT OF CLIMATIC ZONES AND PASSIVE DESIGN PRINCIPLES IN THE HOUSING SECTOR FOR THE ISLAND OF MADAGASCAR
Creating suitable thermal conditions for satisfying human desires for thermal comfort has been recognized to be an essential requirement of the indoor environment. Bad thermal conditions can lead to occupant dissatisfaction and can affect their productivity as well as their performance and health. Therefore, it is essential that thermal comfort in buildings must be taken into serious consideration. The climate classification is extremely useful to building design for thermal comfort objectives. This paper presents the first work of climate classification for the island of Madagascar. Six Major climatic zones were identified. Psychometric charts for the six urban areas of Madagascar were set-up, and passive solar design related to each climate were briefly discussed.
