SOLAR ARCHITECTURE DOWN UNDER GOES BUSH WALKING THE TALK IN REGIONAL NSW

Finally with recognition of the consequences of Climate Change and the impact made by the Built Environment, many Australian governments at all levels are bringing in legislation to encourage more responsible building design. However, whilst some capital cities have begun to push these issues, regional Australia is being left behind, with less population pressure and therefore less incentive. The water issue, however, has hit capital cities in a serious way, with dam levels at record lows, and country towns running out of water. One would hope that such dire circumstances would finally incite a proactive approach. Despite the lack of government-initiated incentives, some architects are trying to get the message out that responsible building and good design is affordable, possible, and in fact essential. But the lack of architects in regional NSW sees many potential clients either designing their own, despite lack of qualifications or skills, buying ready-made housing from the project–home market, or using building designers for what they see as the cheapest and ‘best option. This paper addresses the initial concern, what is being done at legislatively, briefly touching on its failures and success, and case studies of proactive work in regional NSW.
