APPLICATION OF HIGHLY ORDERED ARRAYS OF TITANIA-COATED TITANIUM NANORODS IN ENHANCED PHOTOELECTRO CHEMICAL CELLS
This paper reports on the synthesis and application of ordered arrays of titania-coated titanium nanorods in enhanced photoelectrochemical cells. Ordered arrays of titania-coated titanium nanorods of ~20 nm external diameter and ~5 microns in length were fabricated by sol-gel and sedimentation processes using in-house prepared anodic alumina templates and applied in dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells. Overall photoconversion efficiency of 9.7% was achieved with Ru-bipyridine dye, N719, and iodolyte liquid electrolyte. This is remarkable performance for electrodes only ~5 microns thick is attributed to considerable reduction in trap states in the conduction band of the titania and thus reduced band-bending effects and to reduced electron diffusion distance and time constant and thus improved electron collection efficiency.
