PASSIVE COOLING ABILITY OF A COURTYARD HOUSE IN A HOT AND ARID CLIMATE: A REAL CASE STUDY

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the thermal performance of a courtyard house in a hot and arid climate. It is to determine whether the courtyard is cooler than the rooms surrounding it during the day and also if that the courtyard is cooler than the street outside during the day. This study was conducted in a real courtyard house in 1988 in Los Angeles as a result of a research grant awarded by the University of California Energy Research Group to Professor Richard Schoen and the author to monitor the passive cooling capacity of a courtyard house in the low desert of Southern California. State of art sensing devices that measured air temperature, relative humidity, and solar radiation were used. Description of the experiment, data analysis and results are included in this paper.
