SUSTAINABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT FOR RURAL CHINA

This paper describes the general approach to sustainable energy development trialled in an international and multi-disciplinary project in six Chinese villages. Methods used for evaluating baseline energy demand, exploring future energy scenarios, assessing possible energy efficiency improvements and establishing renewable energy prospects are explained. The participatory process of scenario-making by engaging villagers is introduced. Practical means for identifying energy efficiency savings and local renewable energy resources are summarised. Possible net carbon dioxide emissions savings, based on life cycle assessment data, are determined. Results are illustrated from the outcome of work in the villages.
