ESTIMATION OF SOLAR RADIATION IN KOREA PENINSULAR FROM SATELLITE IMAGE

Images captured by the geostationary satellite may be used to estimate the solar irradiation on the earths surface. It is based on the empirical correlation between the satellite derived cloud index(cloudiness) and the solar radiation on the ground. To estimate the solar radiation flux, we first evaluate the cloud index from the weather images captured by the satellite. Then we found the correlation of cloud index with the actually measured solar radiation. Finally the correlation is used to estimate the solar radiation of the area again and the estimated results are compared with the actual data to prove the accuracy of estimation. Data measured over 24 years (1982—2005) in South Korea are used in finding the correlation.
