Visualization Methods of Linux System
It has been very difficult for students to understand the runtime mechanism of operating system kernel due to its complexity. A new way is proposed to look into the kernel of a operating system, and a visualization tool for the operating system teaching is developed to demonstrate a series of operations performed in the operating system. All of demonstrations are driven by a data set collected from the runtime operating system. Based on the Linux system, we embed pieces of codes to collect the key state data of the runtime kernel.Then visual-ization program demonstrates dynamically the kernel activities based on the collected data. This paper creates a model to express formally the key states of system processes, puts forward a method to extract the state data from the running Linux kernel, and solves how to describe the objects and their changes in the system with intuitive visual methods.
