Comparative Performance Analysis for Handover Latency between MIPv6 Protocols
Handover latency in Mobile IPv6 plays an important role in the performance of a given network scenario. It results in packet losses and severe End-to-End performance degradation due to throttling and retransmissions in TCP scenario. This paper presents a comparative study regarding the impact of the layer-3 handover latency on end-to-end TCP stream for various Mobile IP architecture variants, namely, the Mobile IPv6, the Hierarchical Mobile IPv6, and the Mobile IPv6 with Fasthandover and the Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 with Fast-handover.We show through simulation that managing registration process in a hierarchical fashion greatly reduces the overall handover latency. Comparatively, the fast-handover mechanism is even more capable in reducing the handover latency.
