COLLAPSE INVESTIGATION AND ANALYSIS OF A LARGE SPAN PORTAL FRAME STRUCTURE
Due to the heavy snow load, one double-span portal frame structure with a span length of 36m was totally collapsed. The collapse investigation was carried out. The failure mode of the purlin, the tension bar, the portal beam and the column etc. was investigated. The collapse process and the reasons inducing the collapse of the structures were analyzed and discussed. It has been proved that some imperfections which have been neglected in the constructional design are the fatal factors responsible for the failure of the structure members. Based on the investigations from the collapse event, some design regulations in different design codes have been studied and compared, and some key problems related to the safety and the reliability of the portal frame structure have been highlighted. In practical engineering design and construction, these problems must be taken into consideration carefully.
