THE APPLICATION OF TUBULAR TRUSS BRIDGES FOR PEDESTRIAN BRIDGES
Tubular truss bridges are a new concept in the field of bridge engineering. The innovative, slender and aesthetic bridge construction gives a new dimension to truss bridges that is more suited to the popular demand for slender bridge structures. This type of steel bridge consists of spiraling members, interlocked together to form a perforated tube. Longitudinal chord members at the top and the bottom of the structure were introduced to allow the helix members to be more slender. This bridge is used as the base point for a parametric analysis using finite element software. The overall stress and deformation behavior of this concept is determined and an application range is derived for pedestrian loading. In addition, the susceptibility of the concept to dynamic excitations is studied and determined to be quite Iow due to the large stiffness of the concept. A buckling as well as a stress analysis determined the supports to be the determining points for the design concept. A number of possible support structures are studied and the optimal configuration is determined. An additional advantage of this type of bridge is that it allows for designing bridges which are curved, as well in a horizontal as in a vertical plane, resulting in a very versatile concept allowing for many variations. A tubular truss bridge is thus an excellent solution for pedestrian bridges, since both structural and dynamic behavior seems to be promising. This manuscript illustrates that this bridge is a very effective, but also slender and aesthetic construction.
