CONSTRUCTION AND DETAILING OF COLD FORMED STEEL SPACE TRUSS

Cold-formed steel has been widely used in building construction. Its advantages include low weight and ease of handling and application. In recent years, it has been acknowledged that cold formed steel sections can be used effectively as primary framing sections. Further to their primary application as purlins and side rails, cold formed steel sections have gained widespread acceptance as basic roof truss components. They are generally designed as plane trusses or plane frames, rarely being designed for complicated three dimensional structures. In Sarawak, EcoSteel Sdn Bhd has successfully applied high strength steel such as TRUECORE TM steel in the construction of three dimensional roof structures. This paper will present the development process in designing and installing the three dimensional roof structures at Tanjung Manis Sarawak, Malaysia. The Australian Standards, AS4600 was used to support the design as it accounted for steel yield strength up to 550MPa. In this project, the roof structure is successfully completed despite being perceived as tedious and time consuming.
