THE EFFECTS OF COLUMN BASE BEHAVIOUR ON THE LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY OF COLUMNS AND FRAMES
The research carried out in Thin Walled Structures Group at Oxford Brookes University into the effects of column base behaviour on the load carrying capacity of columns and frames is reviewed in this paper. The research is discussed largely with reference to the PhD project successfully completed in the University and the subsequence work following is also briefly outlined. It is part of the research concentrates on the behaviour of pallet rack structures, where it has been influential in the development of European standards in pallet rack structures. The experimental data shows that the behaviour of a column base is heavily dependent of the ratio of side load to compressive load in the column uprights as well as on the geometric characteristics of the base plate.
