EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON STRESS DISTRIBUTIONS FOR PARTIALLY OVERLAPPED CHS K-JOINTS
This paper reports the testing results on three full scale Circular Hollow Section(CHS) K-joints with through braces subjected to static tests. The hot spot stress(HSS) distributions along the chord-brace intersections of three partially overlapped CHS K-joints subjected to both the basic loading cases: axial (AX), in-plane (IPB) and out-of-plane bending (OPB), and their combination are experimentally investigated. The experimental results show that the HSSs could be located on either the brace or the chord sides for this kind of joint. The measured stress concentration factors(SCFs) results were compared with those formulae published by Efthymiou 1 and those from finite element (FE) analyses. It is observed that the formulae suggested by Efthymiou may not be completely suitable for the design of partially overlapped CHS K-joints.
