DEPLOYABLE BOOM STRUCTURES-CONCEPT AND EVALUATION
Deployable boom is a lattice-type tower which can be deployed for mounting communication devices. This paper proposes a new type of deployable booms which possess high stiffness and is relatively convenient to deploy. Prototypes have been made to illustrate the proposed deployment mechanism and the possible detailing of joints. The proposed type of boom is compared with the existing deployable booms so that its advantages and disadvantages can be highlighted. Their characteristics are compared in terms of axial, bending and torsional stiffness, and importantly deployment mechanism. The study concludes that the proposed boom systems are structurally efficient while their deployment mechanism is unique and relatively convenient to operate.
