Un-pairing and pairing mechanisms of cylinders wakes at low Reynolds number

The wakes of a circular cylinder and a pair of side-by-side circular cylinders with theReynolds number in the range 60~200 have been investigated experimentally. Some primary spatialdynamics can be concluded as follows. (1) The un-pairing and pairing mechanisms are possessedby the wakes of a circular cylinder and of a pair of side-by-side circular cylinders respectively. (2)Harmonic components are stimulated by both kinds of wakes. In detail, the wakes of a single cylindertake the form m · ff and the ones of a pair of cylinders take the form m · ff/2, where ff denotes thegeneral shedding frequency and m is the natural number. (3) The transitions from the ordered statusto the disordered one of all wakes are characterized by the intermittence of large-scale structures.
