Droplet interactions in an imposed thermal gradient

The thermocapillary motion of two droplets along their line of centers in a liquid subjectedto a uniform temperature gradient is investigated theoretically. The droplets move in the direction of the imposed thermal gradient. And the interaction between the leading droplet and the trailing onebecomes significant as the separation distance between them is decreased greatly so that the dropletinteraction is considered in this case. Based on the superposition theorem, accurate migration veloci-ties of the two droplets are obtained successively using the partial re ection and extended re ectionmethods. As is shown, the complete velocity expressions can be reduced to the two well-known YGBones as s ! 1 and correspond to those given by Sun and Hu J. Colloid Interface. Sci. 255, 375(2002) by letting g =μ0=_0=0. As a corollary, two equal-sized droplets in a microgravity environ-ment have to migrate at an identical velocity which is dependent on the separation distance betweenthem and the ratio of the thermal conductivity of the drop phase to that of the continuous phase.
