Steady ship waves due to a simple source in a viscous fluid
This paper is to revisit the steady ship waves due to a simple mass source submerged inan incompressible uid of infinite depth, with a view of considering the effect of viscosity on the free-surface waves generated. The steady Oseen equations are taken as the governing equation for viscousflows. The kinematic and dynamic conditions on the free-surface are linearized for small-amplitudewaves. The free-surface elevation is given by a double Fourier integral, which involves a genericamplitude function, a complex dispersion function and an elementary phase function. With the aidof two kinds of expansion of the phase function and Lighthills two-stage scheme, the asymptoticrepresentations of the far-field wave profiles are explicitly derived for two regions as the azimuth angleis less than, and close to, the maximal angle of the V-wedge for Kelvin ship waves. A combination of the Stokes and Scorer methods of stationary phase gives uniformly valid results over the panoramicregion. The effect of viscosity on the classical Kelvin ship waves is analytically expressed.
