Numerical simulation of transonic buffet and flow bifurcation over airfoils

Turbulent transonic ow past attened aerodynamic surfaces is investigated numericallyusing the RANS equations. The study is focused on: (a) instability of the entire flow structurewhich eventually results in flow bifurcations, (b) a buffet onset caused by instability of the shockwave/ boundary layer interaction. For a symmetric airfoil at zero angle of attack, computationsreveal both bifurcations and buffet in a range of the freestream Mach number M∞. For a Whitcombtype airfoil, computations show greater stability of the ow structure and separated boundary layers.Axisymmetric ow past axisymmetric bodies is also considered, and instability of the fl ow structureat certain freestream Mach numbers is shown.
