Theoretical and numerical study of vortex-wake flow phenomenon generated from stack of elliptical and cylindrical bodies

This paper is to show a numerical and theoretical analysis of vortex-wake generation forflow over a combination of elliptical shape and stack of cylinders. The orientations of the ellipticalshapes are varied; one is parallel to the flow and the other is vertical to the flow. The numericalresults show characteristics of the wake changing considerably with the orientation of the ellipse for the Reynolds number ranging from 100 to 800. From the numerical results, such as the path lines, onecan conclude that the vortex generation, the wake region, and boundary layer separation are affectedby the orientation of the ellipse. This study reveals that for parallel configuration of the ellipse thedrag is minimized.
