Particle settling behavior in turbulent flow generated by oscillating grid
This paper investigates the particle settling behavior in turbulent ow. Confined turbulent environment was generated by placing an oscillating grid in a water tank, while the settling processes of grains of different sizes were captured by a video camera. The measurements for limited Reynolds numbers show that the particle settling velocity (Wt) was generally enhanced by turbulence and thus greater than that in still water. The velocity ratio Wt/Un, where Un is the Kolmogoroff velocity scale, is also shown to be related to the time scale ratio Tp/Tn, where Tp is the particle relaxation time and Tn is the Kolmogoroff time scale.
