A Numerical Model for Designing a Feeding and Gating System of Castings

Nowadays the numerical simulation should be not only for validation but also for active designing. A 3-D numerical model that can aid designing a feeding and gating system of castings and simulate mould filling as well as solidification has been developed in our centre. Instead of traditional way (by using modulus), the model is based on the solidification time of casting to calculate the feeding system. First of all, the model calculates the solidification of casting only. Based on the solidification time and the volume to be fed of the casting, the model can give the riser and neck dimensions. Then it calculates again with feeding system and modifies the risers (if necessary) until a satisfied riser design has been obtained. Afterwards the program can calculated the gating system depend on the critical wall thickness of casting and pouring temperature. The gating calculation model is based on two principles: the velocity that enters the casting cavity is lower than 50cm/s (avoid turbulence) and the whole gating should be full during filling of the mould. When the complete casting system has been designed, it starts to do mould filling and solidification simulation to validate the designing, and do necessary modifications until a sound casting is achieved. This program has been used for routine casting designing in foundries. The casting right in the first time is possible. In the paper, a sample how to use the model to aid designing a casting gating and feeding system has been demonstrated.
