Continuous multi-point flexible forming for the 3D surface sheet metal using bendable rollers
This paper presents a novel idea which using bendable rollers to form three-dimensional sheet metal parts, proposes the conception of multipoint continuous flexible forming using bendable rollers, and analyses its principles. Furthermore, multipoint continuous flexible forming equipment has been developed. Some crucial numerical simulation and experiments were performed on forming different 3D surface sheets. It can be seen from the experiments that the curvature along one direction of the 3D sheet metal part is determined by the curvature of the flexible rollers, and the curvature along another direction is determined by the relative displacement among the top center roller and a pair of bottom rollers. The equipment has the ability of controlling the varying deformation path; it can realize the continuous forming of long sheet metal. The technology of forming 3D surface sheet metal using bendable rollers can produce 3D surface parts in a rapid and economical way, so it has widely application in the future.
