Experimental study of GFRP-strengthened bridge RC beams subjected to fatigue loading
GFRP composites have been widely used as external reinforcement for concrete beams. However, experimental researches on the behavior of such GFRP-reinforced elements in general have been limited, especially those on fatigue performance. The paper deals with a study of fatigue property by testing a total of nine full-size reinforced concrete beams strengthened by GFRP. All fatigue tests were carried out on fatigue machine with frequency of 6Hz. Those structrual parameters such as Mid-span deflection, fatigue strain of steel bar and fibre have been carried out to analyse in detail. The crack development and propagation mechanism have been discussed and the relationship between those structural parameters, loading level and cylic number have also been established. The statistical S-N relationships and the expression of lowering coefficients of the fatigue bending stiffness have been gained based on experimental results. The fatigue failure characteristics and mechanism have been discussed.
