Effects of Film Mulching and Improving Soil Fertility on Yield, WUE and NUE of Pumpkin Grown on a Dry Sandy Soil in Northwest Plateau of Hebei Province
The effects fertilizer rates, methods of improving soil fertility and film mulching on yield, water use efficiency (WUE) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of pumpkin were studied. The soil at the experimental site in the northwest plateau of Hebei Province, was dry and sandy. Two designs of film mulching were studied, film mulching on the ridge and furrow mulching. For the two mulching treatments, the biomass of plants fertilized with inorganic fertilizer rose from 29.9% to 50.3% and from 40.6% to 53.0% ; the biomass with foreign soil and organic fertilizer increased from 0.14% to 53.1% and from 48.4% to 105.7% than those with alone using inorganic fertilizer, and the yield of pumpkin with fertilization increased from 5.58% to 31.33% and from 5.13% to 35.26% than those with no fertilizer. Compared to the treatments of film mulching on ridge, the yield with film mulching over furrow increased from 1.64% to 15.43%. The highest yield which was up to 13 958.4 kg ha-1 appeared in the treatment of film mulching over furrow and inorganic and organic fertilizer using together. The difference of water consumption average value of pumpkin was very small between the two film mulching methods. The highest WUE was 60.60 kg mm-1 ha-1 in the treatment of film mulching on ridge and using inorganic and organic fertilizer together.
