Management Strategies for Wind Erosion in the North Ecotone of China

The north ecotone or fringe of agro-pasture areas is one of the main fragile and poorer regions in China, and is also one of the main sources of sand and dust affecting the mainland suffering serious desertification. Irrational human activities, e.g. over-grazing, and reclamation of pasture driven by population increase and climate change have caused land degradation, particularly from strong wind erosion of the bare field in winter and spring. Based on 20 years research work, technical ways and measures of reducing field erosion have been developed such as adjusting ground roughness, promoting soil particle aggregation and increasing vegetation cover during winter and spring. Strategies for integrated management and sustainable development of the north ecotone are also suggested.
