Next Generation Flame Retardants for Flexible Polyurethane Foams

Upholstered furniture, mattresses, and automotive seating manufactured today rely on flexible polyurethane foam (FPF) as the primary cushioning material. In these applications, flexible polyurethane foam products provide the comfort and support that the end-users demand. Like all other organic materials, when exposed to an ignition source with sufficient heat, FPF products will burn.Historically flame retardants have been added to the FPF to render the foam more combustion resistant. Recently the environmental impact and human health concerns have lead flexible foam producers to seek alternatives.Although alternatives have now been successfully introduced, it is clear that continuous improvement is needed. This paper discusses the issues being faced and the next generation of flame retardants being developed for FPF products. The flame retardants will be evaluated according to their enhancement of flammability performance and environmental profile.
