Preparation and characterization of flame retardant polyester nanocompsite
Poly(ethylene terephthalate)/montmorillnite/2-Carboxyethyl (phenyl) phosphinic acid (PET/MMT/CEPP) nanocomposites were prepared through direct-esterification process by adding reactive or additive flame retardant (CEPP) before esterification, and organic MMT was added before polycondensation. The characterization of flame retardant polymer nanocompsites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and cone calorimeter (CONE). The results showed that the activation energy of thermal degradation of the flame retardant nanocomposite containing certain organic MMT was largely improved. Although, the organic MMT played a role as efficient nucleating agents in the crystallization nucleation of nanocomposite, the crystallization rate of PET was decreased. Both the heat release rate (HRR) and effective heat of combustion (EHC) significantly declined.
