The Phosphate Ester Flame Retardant Consortium (Pefrc)

Established in 2002the Phosphate Ester Flame Retardant Consortium (Pefrc) brings together manufacturers and users of phosphate ester flame retardants around the world, and aims to provide a global scientific knowledge centre concerning phosphate ester flame retardants.Over the past years phosphate ester flame retardants have proved critical materials in reducing death and injury through fire related accidents, saving the lives of thousands of people, and demonstrating the efficiency and value of their use in flame retarding many of the products which are now used in everyday life. This paper will provide an overview of the Pefrc activities, its members and projects. Pefrc is also involved in the official EU risk assessments of existing chemicals (Directive 793/93), and in the second part of this paper an overview is given on how chemicals, and more specifically flame retardants, are assessed in Europe and what the implications are for the industry.
