Smart RectifierTM increases Power Density in Flyback Topologies while reducing System Complexity

This paper presents the new IR1167 Smart RectifierTM control IC. Fast, accurate sensing of a switching voltage waveform enables effective management of synchronous rectification MOSFETs using the power device itself as current sensor,without any need of PLL or external timing sources.Discrete, current transformer based methods are analyzed and compared; efficiency and system size improvements in existing as well as new designs as a consequence of this new technique are also discussed. Finally, experimental comparison done on some commercial systems using Schottky rectifiers and discrete analog techniques for synchronous rectification are presented.
