Application of Magnetic Energy Recovery Switch to Improve Synchronous Generator Performance and Efficiency

This paper presents experimental studies on the application of MERS (Magnetic Energy Recovery Switch) to a synchronous generator. We have experimentally verified the advantage effect of MERS in a small-scale experimental system of wind power generation with a synchronous generator. By applying MERS to a synchronous generator, the synchronous reactance in the generator is compensated and the overload capability is improved. This paper describes the control principles of MERS and experimental results of the small-scale synchronous generator and the comparison of the 50-kW MERS system with the conventional back-to-back PWM converter.
